Nukakamma meaning “grassy water”, is the Khoisan name for Sundays River because of its verdant grassy banks. Nukakamma Canoe Trail is a much sought after two day flat-water trail along the Sundays River, which is situated some 40kms from Port Elizabeth (a mere half hour’s drive). The Nukakamma Canoe Trail is the only Green Flag Status Canoe Trail in South Africa.
The journey begins aboard our 4 metre double canoes with a 13km trip along the Sundays River from our premises to your overnight accommodation and a 13km canoe trip back the following day. We can accommodate a maximum of 21 people on a trail and the trails can be extended to 2 nights at a discounted rate. For safety reasons we do not allow less than 6 people on the trail at any one time.
Arrive at our A Taste of Africa Restaurant to sign in and our guide will direct you to our premises. Once there you will off load your luggage into our trailer and we will help set you up on the canoes.
While you are canoeing to the cabin we will take all your luggage and our provided bedding to the cabin and all will be ready for your arrival.
The river is on average about 2m deep at high tide except at the mouth where it is much shallower. Depending on weather conditions, the journey can take anything from 3 to 5 hours, according to the tide and the wind.
The accommodation is an overnight two cabins with two or three-tiered wooden bunk-beds, fitted with foam rubber mattresses. It also has a covered barbecue area and is equipped with two picnic tables and some braai utensils.
Experience the thrill and excitement of the area with the bird life ranging to approximately 210 recorded species and watching out for Mullet fish actively jumping into or over the canoes. Keep your eyes peeled for Kudu, Bushbuck, Porcupine, Cape Otter, Vervet Monkeys and other wildlife in the bush across the river. Finally, finish your day off by enjoying a barbeque with the view of a spectacular sunset.

Whilst I did not participate in the canoe trip I can say that I was very impressed for your professional service You are without doubt vey well organised and supportive in all respects to all those who were involved. It was a pleasure dealing with you and I will recommend you to anyone who enquires about participating in your great adventure I suggest that you send a similar request for a review to Laurence Weitz who was the groups Leader. I know from their feedback that they all had a fantastic time His email address is laurence.weitz@gmail.com - Keith
We were very excited to do this canoe trail. Unfortunately the day was a little bit windy and while it was fine on land, the wind was far more severe on the water. We did not know this or expect it. It would have been useful if we had been warned on the morning that the wind would be problematic and what should be done if the paddlers were blown backwards and could make no progress. In addition I would have liked to know what safety or support measures were in place. As it was 4 groups of paddlers set off and all but one boat capsized or was just swamped by small waves. This happened a few times meaning there was no progress. Luckily the paddlers were picked up by a motorboat and ultimately taken to the cabin. We appreciated that the group still got the night in the cabin and that was a lovely experience. However it would have been better if the canoes could have been taken there too so at least they could canoe back the next morning and still get the canoeing experience. As it was there was very little canoeing and some concerns about safety and support. - Eileen
Overall good experience. Rustic cabin is good but could do with some maintenance (fill holes in roof, fix the broken planks on walkway etc). This is a physical activity and a good mattress would be appreciated upon arrival. Lastly, we informed personnel that we would leave the next morning at 7, knowing it took us three hours. We arrived back at 10 with the gates locked, nobody there and left in the rain. Our bags only arrived at 12 with no explanation. This is the specific reason we won't be going back again. Pitty. - Kyle
Hi the canoeing was great. Robert was a wonderful host and answered all our questions. The only problem was your bush hut....the place needs a good maintenance. Roof plates are loose so in the storm wind no one could sleep as it sounded as world war 3. The windows cant latch, it was so hot but we had to close the windows or the glass would break. You really need more windows in the bedrooms it is crazy hot and humid with no airflow. Toilets needs jeyes fluid and a layer of sand very stinky mess. Shower needs hooks for clothes and a shelf . You will have to put musquoto nets in front of the windows and door and seal the bedroom roof as we had a dozen spiders through the night on the beds that we had to kill. So trip was great but sleeping was a nightmare. Breakfast at the restaurant was amazing. Thanks - Lizette
Lol thank you for a awesome experience, now the 3rd time doing the trail and it never fails ? to provide a good time. The added land marks also improved on the experience. Only thing I could ask for was maybe a chart for the water pump, we figured out ok if we open the basin tap then the pump kicks in so can shower, also we could not use the rain water tank ,you would open the tap but nothing, so if there was a chart explaining that it would be awesome, but It was and has always been a fun time. - Shafeeq
