Nukakamma canoe trail - One night only

Addo Elephant National Park

Activity Description

Nukakamma meaning “grassy water”, is the Khoisan name for Sundays River because of its verdant grassy banks. Nukakamma Canoe Trail is a much sought after two day flat-water trail along the Sundays River, which is situated some 40kms from Port Elizabeth (a mere half hour’s drive). The Nukakamma Canoe Trail is the only Green Flag Status Canoe Trail in South Africa.

The journey begins aboard our 4 metre double canoes with a 13km trip along the Sundays River from our premises to your overnight accommodation and a 13km canoe trip back the following day. We can accommodate a maximum of 21 people on a trail and the trails can be extended to 2 nights at a discounted rate. For safety reasons we do not allow less than 6 people on the trail at any one time.

Arrive at our A Taste of Africa Restaurant to sign in and our guide will direct you to our premises. Once there you will off load your luggage into our trailer and we will help set you up on the canoes.

While you are canoeing to the cabin we will take all your luggage and our provided bedding to the cabin and all will be ready for your arrival.

The river is on average about 2m deep at high tide except at the mouth where it is much shallower. Depending on weather conditions, the journey can take anything from 3 to 5 hours, according to the tide and the wind.

The accommodation is an overnight two cabins with two or three-tiered wooden bunk-beds, fitted with foam rubber mattresses. It also has a covered barbecue area and is equipped with two picnic tables and some braai utensils.

Experience the thrill and excitement of the area with the bird life ranging to approximately 210 recorded species and watching out for Mullet fish actively jumping into or over the canoes. Keep your eyes peeled for Kudu, Bushbuck, Porcupine, Cape Otter, Vervet Monkeys and other wildlife in the bush across the river. Finally, finish your day off by enjoying a barbeque with the view of a spectacular sunset.

Customer Reviews

We had a wonderful time. Three generations together enjoying the fun, sun and beautiful Sundays River. The 4 hour paddle up on Saturday was easy and beautiful. We celebrated my grandsons 12th birthday at the cabin and enjoyed an afternoon of swimming, fishing and relaxing. The accommodation was comfortable and all the more exciting with the field mice and dungbeatles sharing with us. Sunday's home paddle proved too difficult with the gale force wind arriving earlier than expected. Abandoning canoes on the bank and a phone call to Candice, and the Ferry arrived to rescue us and delivered us and the canoes safely back to the start. All this just added to our family adventure and made it a weekend that made special memories that will be spoken of for years to come. Thanks to all of you for making this possible. - Lesley Mitchley
